NJ official seeks 'Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair Act'

GasBuddy Blog -- Officially, it's called the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair Act (A-352), a bill sponsored by Assemblyman Reed Gusciora. And if it gains momentum, that may help all of us.

The bill is designed to loosen up the vise-like grip that automotive dealers have on repair work for vehicles requiring advanced computer and diagnostic technologies that are integral elements for vehicles. While computers have made cars more reliable and efficient, they have also made them more complicated to diagnose and repair.

As such, consumers are often forced to get their vehicle repaired solely by a manufacturer's car dealer, denying them any choice. Often consumers cannot get their vehicle fixed by the mechanic they might prefer...

This is good. Dealership service departments are nothing more than overpriced parts-swap barns.

Long gone are the days of simple auto repair engine fixes, you could sit in the engine compartment with the engine and work on it. Now you need a computer to almost figure out what is wrong with it.
“This is just a money grab, plain and simple” That says it all!
You have the right to repair your vehicle yourself or at a repair shop of your choice. I still repair the mechanical areas but no so with the engine electrical and other technical issues.
Go to an auto parts store and use their code reader for free, just buy the parts from them for their service.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Any repair shop should have access to codes that is needed to repair your vehicle, NOT just the Dealer that is double on the labor bill... I have never gone back to any dealer after the warrantee runs out...

Also, can we change the new stories on a daily basis, please?

Lowering shop rates is not going to work...I'd bet most of you (unless you are actually in the business) have never stepped foot in the shop where the Techs actully work. Most of them, unless you are in a high-end dealership lack A/C or have very poor A/C. The guys are left to deal with the crap brought in thats always a mess and is by no means clean to work on. The rates that are charged are high because most dealership do work against "Warranty Time" and the Tech makes little to nothing on it. The only time they really make money is on the cars out of warranty.

right good, installing a cheap code reader will save a lot of trouble, it should be a standard in modern vehicles.

One of these days I'm tempted to build my own computer electronics for a car... side benefit being that then I can design my own software for theft prevention...

(step on gas to half throttle and have brakes depressed, flash high beams once then you're allowed to start, but then you have to turn the wipers on one shot else car will stall in 15 seconds? Who would have known? Oops...)

You need to check before you buy. We shouldn't have to have a law to accomplish these results. Codes used to be openly available. What happened?

dealerships should be forced to lower their repair rates to a preset national average and if they want more/better business the manufacturer the represent should offer sales/coupons

It has nothing to do with "intellectual Property Rights". They're not asking for the computer programming information but rather what the diagnostic codes mean on the computer you bought when you bought your car.

If NJ passes this potential law, an exception should be made where the thing needing repair is under warranty. The owner will not be paying for the repair, so this exception should be allowed.

Consumers should take the time to research any alternatives that are out there. There are many independent mechanics that have all of the proper equipment to diagnose and repair an issue.

Just make sure that you get it written into the sales agreement that they will not deny you or your mechanic access to any maintenance data that may be stored in your car computer, or don't buy the car.

I think this new law may have some teeth and that states can force the automakers to provide information about all diagnostic codes....The whole purpose of OBD system is to standardize the diagnostics and repair procedures....not for any manufacturer to keep secrets.
