NJ official seeks 'Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair Act'

GasBuddy Blog -- Officially, it's called the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Owners' Right to Repair Act (A-352), a bill sponsored by Assemblyman Reed Gusciora. And if it gains momentum, that may help all of us.

The bill is designed to loosen up the vise-like grip that automotive dealers have on repair work for vehicles requiring advanced computer and diagnostic technologies that are integral elements for vehicles. While computers have made cars more reliable and efficient, they have also made them more complicated to diagnose and repair.

As such, consumers are often forced to get their vehicle repaired solely by a manufacturer's car dealer, denying them any choice. Often consumers cannot get their vehicle fixed by the mechanic they might prefer...

they need to regulate how much they charge for parts! I can get the very same part I the very same at a car parts store for one third the cost most times but the dealership will not install that part.

It's the new business model - software companies license their product, they don't sell it and you don't own it. The major sports teams license their seats - by season or even by game. The car makers want the same death grip on the consumer.

This doesn't benefit me much. I'm no mechanic, and I don't want to try to play with anything that is under warentee, so I will let the repair shop do it, for free.

I would MUCH rather have my local mechanic service my car. I trust him. Difficult to say that about many mechanics, especially those at a dealership!

Often dealers don't make a lot of money selling a new car. The real cash cow for them is in routine maintenance per my local dealer.

Is Gvmnt Motors, the taxpayer bailed-out and owned corporation, doing this to it's own owners, you ask. YES. Yes. Yes is the answer to that question.

"nice to clear things up. A rare example of government working correctly, especially in Jersey."

My political leaning tilt in the John Stossel direction, but this is a government action I support. It is my vehicle and my mechanic and I are entitled to know the meaning of every OBD2 address. Thats why vehicles have OBD2.

Yes, it is amazing. You would think that an honest company with the consumer in mind wouldn't force them into a corner.

This is a built in monopoly utilized by all manufacturers to guarantee repair sales and brand loyalty and the neighborhood repair shop is the looser and, of course, you the consumer pay way more.
The only reason there are OBD-II's is federal law requiring universal diagnostic access ports and code, passed last century, designed to save consumers money and local repair shop jobs.
