I bought a 2006 VW Jetta TDI..... gas today was 85.9 Diesel was at 99.9 go fiqure. Why is it Diesel doesn't go down at the same time as gas. 14 cents more is ridiculous !!! For years diesel was cheaper than gas.

Yeah, truckdude, but can you afford to pay $6 a gallon for gas?

Did already. We bought a turbodiesel VW New Beetle last fall, when gas was still $2.75 and the waiting list for a Prius was 6-12 months.
We absolutely love the diesel and get over 40 mpg, which will get better as the engine gets more broken in. We loved it enough that we traded in the other car and bought a VW diesel station wagon in April. These days, you can barely find one - they're great cars that get great mileage and are lots of fun to drive.

In November 2003, the price was half the current price. So the price has already doubled. In two and half years! And only 15% of the people who voted have got new efficient cars. But 51% now say yes if doubled again . . .
The 2005 sales numbers are out and Ford, GM, and Dodge pickups are still the top three selling "cars" (in that order). My car, Corolla, did not even crack the top 10 (top 10 in fuel economy). And most cars did not. (number 4 is Ford Explorer, 5 = Caravan, etc) Almost everyone is still buying big gas guzzling monsters. Tough to believe that will change when the price doubles again.
P.S. Already have - sold Dodge Ram and bought a Corolla - it is paying for itself with the fuel savings. I got a new car for free!

Before the price of gas would double, the government would step in and limit the amount we could consume, thus driving the price back down. If we were each limited to an alloted amount of gasoline each week, we would be forced to find different ways to get around, or we would just stay home.

I'll just keep what I have for now. The increased savings would take a long time to make up for the expense of buying a new, fuel efficient car.

I suppose that's what I did...
I remember when I first got my last car, it was just under $1.50 per gallon (and I was furious that $5 couldn't last me a WHOLE week anymore)
Of course, the ol' Pontiac was basically in its death throes when I stepped up to the Jetta TDI last month.
From an accountant's point of view, this is really a case-by-case decision. Hopefully, the increase in gas prices will cause some people to stop driving, decreasing the risk of accidents somewhat, and alleviating some pressure on the insurance payment side. :P

As frustrating as it may be, my car is currently paid off and therefore I have no payments. In order for it to be worth a new car, for the distance I drive, and the average mpg I get now versus the realistic average mpg I'd get in a new car, the gas price would have to almost go to $10/gallon for a new car to make it worth while. Anything less than that and I'd be losing $$. Now, if my car starts costing me a great deal more in maintenance, then I'll re-evaluate... but for now, as much as I'd like a new car, it is financially to my benefit to keep what I have.

Already have. I did extensive research online comparing companies and models (Thanks to edmonds.com). The Toyota Camry won over the Nissan Sedan for better gas mileage, and using regular gas. I wanted the Toyota hybrid SUV, but it's in the first year, and cost too much.

Already have. In Dec 2003, when gas prices jumped 20% from $0.55/L to $0.66/L, I started to look at fuel efficient cars. In April 2004, after another $0.08 jump, I brought a Corolla 5 speed. And sold my Dodge Ram. Since then I have more than doubled my fuel economy, from 15 L/100K to 6 L/100Km - 16 m/g(US) to 41 m/g. I saved about 7000 litres, read $7000. Actually I got a new car for free - the fuels savings are paying for it. I love it - I never thought I would get a new car.
As far as the price doubling again, I think it will happen with the only question is when. EIA thinks it will take 6 years. But in January 2003 they forecast a price reduction . . . So I think it will be much faster $2.00/L or $6.00/g in summer 2008.

I would be more inclined to buy a fuel efficient vehicle if the prices were comparable. But it seems the more fuel efficient a car is the more expensive it is...eg Hybrids. Do the gas companies have a hand in this?

We need to switch to alternative fuels and stop funding the wars in the middle-east with our oil dollars. I think that is more important than a few mpg on my vehicle, but it goes hand-in-hand. Best yet stop using vehicles that rely on petroleum totally.

Just got done borrowing my brother-in-law's Hemi pickup. Will never complain about the mileage on my SUV again. I was pulling a loaded trailer with the SUV loaded also and only used half the gas of his truck covering the same route.

I'd love to get better mileage, and I am planning on a new car soon. The mileage it gets will definitely be one factor I look at, but more important to me is the ability of the vehicle to protect the passengers in the event of an accident. Generally, it seems that the bigger, heavier cars are safer. Spending a little more on gas is a worthwhile investment, IMHO, if it means my family & I are less likely to be badly injured or killed in a wreck.

Gas price jump may include other aspects of fuels such as alternatives/additives. Vehicle choice should incorporate that functionality. Then we can also just take the bus.

I am not particularly a fan of WalMart, but they deserve credit and our support if the news this morning is correct and they are going to try converting all their gas stations to Ethanol blend. Then changing to cars that can burn that would be great.

It would have to at least double to make the change to a new vehicle start to look reasonable.
